Pahatha Rata Natum | Traditional Dance Workshop with Iresha

  • Bo, Ahangama Ahangama, Southern Province Sri Lanka (map)

Have you ever been mesmerised by the rhythms of Sri Lanka’s traditional drums and dances and wanted to give it a go?

Meet Iresha, founder of Sandaranga Dance Academy in Dikkumbura, sharing the Matara tradition of Pahatha Rata Natum, Sri Lanka’s traditional southern or low-country dance. This living practice is carried through generations of teachers and students.

We found her class tucked away in Dikkumbura village, and it has become something we adore. Sweaty, joyful, physically energising and spiritually uplifting, it is a community experience we feel honoured to be part of. Now we’d love to open the circle to you.

For our ancestors, dance was more than movement. It was woven into worship, invoking deities and traditional healing rituals. Here’s a chance to begin meeting this heritage through your own body.

We’re piloting one introductory class at a subsidised rate so you can meet Iresha, experience the practice and help us discover whether we can make this a regular gathering. Expect a fun, sweaty afternoon moving to the rhythms of the southern Sri Lankan drum. Beginners are warmly welcome.
